Then, finally, the cursor arrow will appear in the middle of the screen for several seconds, then the blue Winxp starting screen will come up and then the machine proceeds to boot ok. This doesn't happen all the time, but it happens about 75% of the time. These black screen are getting longer and longer.

I started my computer and after the first scrolling loading bar screen disappers the whole monitor goes black, but i can here the startup sound, and windows loads, but still have a black screen. I am trying to diagnose the black screen dilemma that basically only comes up on a cold boot, rather than a restart. I have gone into msconfig and disabled a few things I thought could be culprits. When the black screen, I choose the option to startup using the last known good configuration.

I can just see the mouse pointer and the whole other screen is black.What should i do? Also i upgraded xp to Vista ultimate online so i dont have a backup cd. I downloaded the upgrade again on my laptop but i cannot create a disc of that upgrade. The cooling wouldn't matter (unless it has a leak!).

With a startup media of some sort, your Windows 98 CD perhaps? You have to use the same method to start the computer then use delpart to delete the partitions. I tried to install Windows with Boot from CD, but still the black screen appears. I changed the first boot device to CD Rom and disabled all the others.
